Johannesburg [South Africa]: India's quick bowling pair of Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan wreaked havoc on the hapless Proteas in the opening ODI at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday, handing them one of their worst records on home soil. Hunting in pairs to devastating consequences, Arshdeep and Avesh breathed fire, skittling out the Proteas for just 116. It turned out to be South Africa's lowest total in ODIs on home soil.
Their previous lowest was also against India, 118 at Centurion in 2018. With the surface offering a lot of purchase for the quick bowlers, Arshdeep literally had the ball on a string as he claimed his maiden five-for in the 50-over format. Coming in first change, Avesh, too, bowled with great pace and fire, registering impressive figures of 4/27 in 8 overs. Both pacers combined to claim nine wickets between them, which was the most by Indian pacers against South Africa in an ODI innings. The previous best hunting by the Indian quick bowlers in his format was eight wickets at Mohali in 1993 and then again at Centurion in 2013. Through his sensational bowling effort, Arshdeep, who copped a lot of flak over his inconsistent showings in limited-overs formats coming into this game, became the first Indian pacer to claim a five-for against South Africa in ODIs.  Before him, three Indian bowlers had registered figures of five or more wickets in an ODI against the Proteas. However, they were all spinners. Sunil Joshi registered sensational figures of 5/6 against the Proteas in 1999, leggie Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 5/22 in 2018 and Ravindra Jadeja claimed 5/33 earlier this year. After winning the toss, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram surprisingly opted to bat first. However, the decision proved costly as the Indian pacers, making first use of a fresh and nippy surface, inflicted telling blows on the hosts in the initial overs. With half their side back in the dressing room in no time, the Proteas could never recover from the early blows and were eventually worked over for just 116. The match-turning moment came in the second of the South African innings as Arshdeep, with his nippy left-arm pace, prized out Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen in back-to-back balls.  In reply, it took India only 16.3 overs to chase down the target. Debutant southpaw Sai Sudharsan's (55*) and Shreyas Iyer's (52) explosive knocks saw the visitors go 1-0 up in the series with a facile eight-wicket victory.

Centurion [South Africa]: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first against India in the first Test of a two-match series here at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday. Prasidh Krishna received his Test cap from star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, to make his debut in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa. Meanwhile, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja complained of upper back spasms on the morning of the match. He was not available for selection for the first Test.

After drawing the T20I series 1-1 and winning the ODI series 2-1, Men in Blue will be aiming to win their first-ever Test series in South Africa. This will also be the first international assignment of veteran players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah following the loss to Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cup finals. Speaking at the time of toss, Temba Bavuma said, "We'll bowl first. Wicket has been under covers, we want to use the moisture and make early inroads. Our boys have all got into reasonably fit conditions, Lungi is the only one who's not yet fully fit. Two debutants today - Nandre Burger and David Bedingham. We're playing with four seamers for this one. It is always difficult to come up against India, but we are ready with our preparation." "Wasn't too sure. We are quite aware of the conditions, we have been here a few times. We need to put runs on the board and the bowlers will do the job for us. We do understand the challenge of batting first with the overhead conditions and the grass, but the guys are up for the challenge. Everytime we come here, we come with high hopes. Centurion: Marco Jansen was on the verge of completing his first Test hundred, but was left stranded at 84 not out as South Africa’s first innings ended at 408 on day three of the first Test against India at SuperSport Park on Thursday.  For the Proteas, veteran opener Dean Elgar, who will retire from international cricket after the two-match Test series ends, top-scored with a majestic 185, before mixing sharp driving shots with good judgement to hit 11 fours and a six in his 84 off 147 balls.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of bowlers with 4-69, while Mohammed Siraj briefly shined in his 2-91.  But their change bowlers, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, were ineffective and lacklustre in their lines and lengths while taking a wicket each, and allowed the Proteas batters to score freely in what was a disappointing bowling show from the visitors’.  A few balls into the second session, Bumrah struck to knock over Kagiso Rabada's off-stump and send it on a cartwheel ride. Jansen continued to be impressive in his drives, but Bumrah ended the innings by yorking Nandre Burger’s stumps, and Temba Bavuma didn’t come out to bat due to a left hamstring strain.  In the first session, Elgar and Jansen to put a stand of 111 runs for the sixth wicket, with the crowd cheering them on. Bumrah and Siraj produced a few plays and misses in their first six overs, but that was it and Jansen began by capitalising on Prasidh’s poor lines by taking back-to-back fours.  Elgar then feasted on Prasidh’s bowling by reaching his 150 with a nice drive in the gap between mid-off and extra cover for four off a low full toss, and followed it up with an outside edge running past third slip for four.  Jansen struck two fours off Thakur as there was no end to India’s misery, especially after KL Rahul couldn’t quickly take the chance of Jansen off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling.  Despite taking the new ball, South Africa continued to take runs quickly as Indian fielders’ shoulders continued to drop, with the bowlers unable to create pressure and take wickets. Jansen got his second fifty by chipping Siraj over mid-off and tickled him past fine leg for consecutive boundaries.  The duo continued to pick boundaries freely till Elgar was caught down the leg side thanks to Thakur extracting extra bounce on a back of the length delivery. It ended Elgar’s innings at 185, his second highest Test score, as the left-handed batter walked off to a standing ovation from his home crowd.  India resorted to implementing a short-ball barrage strategy, but it didn’t work as Gerald Coetzee tucked Thakur for four, followed by Jansen pulling and tickling for six and four respectively.  Coetzee then deposited Prasidh over long-on for six, before picking out mid-off against Ashwin, as the session came to a close, where Elgar and Jansen doubled South Africa’s control in the match. Cape Town [South Africa]: Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took India to 111/4 and have a lead by 56 runs at Tea break on the first day of the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town on Wednesday. After scoring 55 runs in their first inning, South Africa were able to fight back in the game after Proteas pacer Nandre Burger bagged three wickets in the second session.
Virat Kohli (20* runs from 27 balls) and KL Rahul (0* runs from 7 balls) are on the crease for India after the end of the second session on day one. Yashasvi Jaiswal (0 runs from 7 balls) had a poor start to India's first session and was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the 3rd over of India's first inning. However, after the dismissal of Jaiswal, Rohit (39 runs from 50 balls) and Gill (36 runs from 55 balls) took in charge of the game. The India skipper slammed 7 fours, while, the 24-year-old hit five boundaries.
But India failed to make a solid partnership after Nandre Burger's fiery spell which helped the Proteas to dismiss Rohit and Gill in the 15th and 21st over respectively. Burger's third wicket of the game came when he removed Shreyas Iyer for a two-ball duck in the 23rd over. As of now, India look forward to Kohli and Rahul's partnership to dominate the final session of the day. Recapping the first session of day one, India speedster Mohammed Siraj produced an irresistible spell to crush South Africa's batting order with his 6-wicket haul to bundle out the hosts for 55 in the second Test at the Newlands. A spell of 6/15 from Siraj in 9 overs absolutely demolished the hosts as they were bundled out for a total of 55. It was his first five-wicket haul in South Africa and third overall. Pacer bagged the crucial wickets of Markram, Dean Elgar, Tony de Zorzi, David Bedingham, the dangerous Marco Jansen and Kyle Verreynne. South Africa lost wickets at frequent intervals after opting to bat first. In addition to Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar each grabbed two wickets. New Delhi: South Africa and World Cup semifinals used to be a sporting tragedy of Shakepearean proportions. Not anymore.
Shedding the unwanted tag of perennial "chokers", the Proteas marched into their maiden T20 World Cup final unbeaten in Tarouba, Trinidad, comfortably beating tournament giant-slayers Afghanistan.  The triumph wiped off years of heartache and the trauma of being labelled under-performers despite having some of international cricket's biggest names in the line-up.  PTI takes a look at the Proteas' tormented past when they failed to get over the line at key junctures in global events.
1. 1992 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia Not quite a choke but just bad luck. Emerging after 22 years of exile following the end of apartheid in the country, South Africa had everything going for them, their lightening quick bowlers were excelling, their fielders affected sensational run-outs.  However, in the semifinal, rain came and the equation went from a reasonably gettable 22 off 7 balls to 22 off just one ball, thanks to a miscommunication on their revised target.  2. 1996 ODI World Cup quarterfinal vs West Indies Having won all their group games, Hansie Cronje and his men started firm favourites against West Indies in the quarterfinal. But Brian Lara played an absolute blinder while spinners Roger Harper and Jimmy Adams spun a web to inflict a 19-run defeat on the Proteas.  3. 1999 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia Perhaps the most devastating game in South Africa's cricketing history. The semifinal at Edgbaston that turned tournament's best player Lance Klusener into the World Cup's biggest tragic hero.  Chasing a modest 214, South Africa needed nine off the final over with the final pair at the crease. Klusener smashed the first two balls for fours to level the scores but Allan Donald was run out and the game was tied.  Australia went through to the final as they had won the previous game between the teams in the super sixes stage.  4. 2007 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia South Africa's decision to bat first backfired dramatically as a revered line-up, including the likes of Graeme Smith, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher, was shot out for 149. Australia finished the game off with nearly 20 overs to spare.  5. 2009 T20 World Cup semifinal vs Pakistan The Proteas had defeated New Zealand, England, West Indies and India to reach the last four stage high on confidence. But a miserly spell by Shahid Afridi stopped them as they failed to chase a reasonably decent 150.  6. 2011 ODI World Cup quarterfinal vs New Zealand A line up boasting of AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy failed to chase down a small target of 222 against New Zealand. At 108 for 3 in the 25 overs, South Africa looked set to cruise to victory but then lost next seven wickets for 64 runs.  7. 2013 Champions Trophy semifinal vs England South Africa were reeling at 8/80 before David Miller and Rory Kleinveldt inflated the total to 175. But Jonathan Trott smashed an unbeaten 82 and England won by seven wickets with more than 12 overs spare.  "I think we did choke in the game. You've got to accept that's what it is. It's definitely a dark mist that hangs over South African cricket in knockout events," coach Gary Kirsten had said after the game.
8. 2014 T20 World Cup semifinal vs India South Africa's semifinal curse continued as they failed to get over the line in another crunch match. This time against a clinical Indian unit.  9. 2015 ODI World Cup semifinal vs New Zealand The tide didn't turn for the Proteas. A golden generation of South Africa cricketers, at their peak, had all bases covered. But were knocked out by New Zealand again in the semifinals stage giving yet another heartbreak.  10. 2022 T20 World Cup Super 12 vs the Netherlands A solitary win away from the semifinals, South Africa choked, suffering a 13-run shock defeat at the hands of a spirited Netherlands side.  11. 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal vs Australia The Proteas galloped through the league stage, even inflicting a massive 134-run defeat on Australia. But when it came to the crucial last four game, South Africa meekly surrendered to the men from Down Under in the semifinals, for their fifth semifinal exit in 50-over World Cups.

While Proteas recorded an authoritative nine-wicket defeat to end Afghanistan's dream campaign, India defeated England by 68 runs and took revenge of their defeat in the semis of 2022 edition. Though South Africa has a history of choking under crucial situations in knockout games, Miller has a fine record playing for Proteas in crunch games. During the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal in 2013 against England, he scored a fine 56 in 51 balls with five fours and two sixes to take Proteas to 175 from a poor position of 80/8, though England chased down the total easily.

Then came the 2014 T20 World Cup semifinal against India, in which he played a fine cameo of 23* in 12 balls, with two fours and a six to take Proteas to 172/4 in their 20 overs, which India chased thanks to Virat Kohli's 72*. In the 2015 Cricket World Cup semis, Miller gave a major flourish to Proteas' already high run-rate, scoring 49 runs in just 18 balls, with six fours and three sixes at a strike rate of over 272 to take Proteas to 281/5 in 43 overs of a rain-effected game. New Zealand chased the target of 298 runs within the same time-frame to handover Proteas yet another hearbreak. Eight years later, delivering perhaps his most valuable contribution of his career, Miller scored 101 in 116 balls, with eight fours and five sixes during the 50-over World Cup semifinal against Australia, to take them from 24/4 to 212 runs in 49.4 overs. Australia once again handed a heartbreak to Miller, chasing the total in 47.2 overs in a hard-fought game with three wickets left. In ICC tournament knockouts, Miller has scored 229 runs in four games at an average of 76.33, with a century and fifty each. His best score is 101. Miller has also featued in numerous Indian Premier League (IPL) knockout matches in his career while playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans, playing knocks of 8 (in losing cause against Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier one back in 2014), 38 (in winning cause against Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier two) and 1* (in losing cause against KKR in the final). Then for Gujarat Titans in 2022, he played brisk knocks of 68* and 32* against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier one and finals, which came in winning situations. During the last year's Qualifier one against CSK, he scored just four runs in losing cause. In 10 knockout games in T20 and 50-over cricket, Miller has scored 380 runs in 10 innings at an average of 63.33, with a century and two half-centuries.

While the Proteas recorded an authoritative nine-wicket win to end Afghanistan's dream campaign, India defeated England by 68 runs and took revenge for their defeat in the semis of the 2022 edition. In a social media post on X, De Villiers said, "The moment of truth has arrived. South Africans have been waiting for 33 years to see the Proteas play in an ICC World Cup final. After so many heartbreaks, we know all about them. South Africa will play India in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on Saturday and I am backing the Proteas to win. It will be close as we all know India are a team of superstars but I believe South Africa's time has come." The legendary batter said that the Proteas are packed with power and though many people would say that they have not played their best cricket yet, winning eight games straight is not bad either.

On their way to the final, the Proteas recorded an authoritative nine-wicket win to end Afghanistan's dream campaign, India defeated England by 68 runs and took revenge for their defeat in the semis of the 2022 edition. Both teams have had a contrasting run in the tournament. The Rohit Sharma-led side has dominated each side that they have faced in the tournament, including heavyweights like Australia, Pakistan, and England. While the Proteas have, on numerous occasions, escaped defeat by a narrow margin en route to the final Bangladesh and Nepal gave them a run for their money in the group stage. In their final game of the Super 8 against the co-hosts, the West Indies, they almost sealed their exit while chasing the revised target of 123. They lost a couple of wickets towards the end but Marco Jansen came to the rescue and sealed a three-wicket win. After winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma said, "We're going to bat first, looks a good pitch. We've played one game here, and the scores have been really good. Just about understanding individual roles, I know it's a big occasion, but it's important to remain calm and play it like it's another international game against a good team. South Africa have played some good cricket, but so have we. It's going to be a really good game between two quality teams. Different individuals have stepped up at different times, and that's what we're looking forward to today as well. Same team. South Africa captain Aiden Markram said during the time of the toss, "Would've batted first as well, looks dry. But we get first crack with the ball so hopefully, we can do well.
