Shillong: Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced on Wednesday that coal mining would resume after a nine-year hiatus.
According to him, the Union Ministry of Coal has granted mining leases to four applicants, paving the way for the launch of scientific mining that will have minimal impact on the environment thanks to the use of sustainable and legally compatible extraction methods.
"The Ministry of Coal approved mining leases for four out of seventeen applicants for prospecting licences last month, marking a major step towards launching scientific coal mining," Sangma said.—Inputs from Agencies
